Queen fans around the world have been astounded by the recent uncovering of an early draft of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Documents from the now-defunct British Midland Airways show the classic 1975 hit penned by Freddie Mercury was first called ‘Mongolian Rhapsody.’

The manuscript of the song is part of the Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own exhibition currently on display at Sotheby’s Auction House in London. The exhibit showcases some of Mercury’s personal collection and belongings, as well as the manuscripts for ‘Somebody To Love,’ ‘We Are The Champions’ and ‘Don’t Stop Me Now,’ all autographed by Mercury. Other items such as a pair of his Adidas sneakers, his aviator sunglasses, and a leather jacket are also available to view.

The early draft of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ reveals untold insights into one of the greatest pop songs of the 20th century. Changes were made to the song’s second verse, which originally read, “Mama, there’s a war began, I’ve got to leave tonight.” The final version of the lyrics read, “Mama, just killed a man.” The manuscript is estimated to be auctioned between $100,000 and $150,000,000.

Mary Austin, who has been handling Mercury’s estate and home since his passing in 1991, said in a statement: “Freddie was an incredible and intelligent collector who showed us that there is beauty and fun and conversation to be found in everything. I hope [the exhibitions and auctions] will be an opportunity to share all the many facets of Freddie, both public and private, and for the world to understand more about, and celebrate, his unique and beautiful spirit.”

The stunning exhibition at Sotheby’s will be open until September 5th, 2021. A portion of the sale’s income will go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust and the Elton John Aids Foundation. This is a rare chance to get a peek into the creative genius of Freddie Mercury and the iconic Queen song. Don’t miss out on the opportunity.
