Dave Grohl and Melissa Auf Der Maur were once madly in love, but despite their connection through music, the two eventually chose to go their separate ways.
The two began dating in 1999, when Hole released their seminal album ‘Celebrity Skin’ and the Foo Fighters released their breakthrough record ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’.
Auf Der Maur has since discussed their relationship in a new Sirius XM interview, and shared that the reason for their split was due to their diverging career paths.
The former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist credited their connection to their common love of music, and the fact they were both “non-drug-addict, technically happy [and] highly functioning people”.
Despite their split, the two remain on good terms, with Auf Der Maur recently recalling how the couple ended on good terms, saying “it was all love”.
Grohl has since gone on to have a successful career with the Foo Fighters, most recently releasing their 11th album ‘But Here We Are’ earlier this month.
The record has been certified Number One on the UK Albums Charts, and is one of the band’s most emotionally honest releases to date.
The Foo Fighters have since began their 2023 comeback tour and are rumoured to be appearing at Glastonbury 2023 as The Churnups.
Meanwhile, Auf Der Maur has since married filmmaker Tony Stone and has an 11-year-old daughter called River. The couple also founded a New York-based nonprofit art centre in 2010, called Basilica Hudson.
Back in 2020, Auf Der Maur’s former bandmate, Courtney Love, teased fans by revealing that she had been in the studio with the bassist.
Though the two have gone on to follow different paths, their shared love of music continues to connect them.
