Fans of Placebo were ecstatic when the iconic alternative rock band performed their gender-bending breakthrough hit, ‘Nancy Boy’, live for the first time in six years at Download 2023. Band co-founder Stefan Olsdal reflected on their ‘Best of’ tour, sharing that they felt like they had to embark on a “hideously materialistic and mercantile endeavour” in order to keep the support of their record label.
The band had become disillusioned with their older material and decided to take a break from performing it. However, after the success of their performance at Download, Placebo decided to bring ‘Nancy Boy’ back into their set list.
Fans took to social media to express their excitement, with one fan tweeting a clip of the performance saying “I cant stop freaking out over Placebo playing ‘Nancy Boy’ tonight.” Another fan said they could “cry with happiness” at the performance.
Placebo are currently on their UK and Ireland tour, with remaining shows in Cambridge, Glasgow and Dublin. The band requested that fans not film or take photos during the shows, to allow them to connect with the audience and more effectively communicate the emotion of the songs.
