Legendary alternative rock band Sonic Youth have announced the release of a live album, recorded at their final North American show in New York City. Titled ‘Live in Brooklyn 2011’, the album captures the band’s full 17-song set from their August 2011 show at the iconic Williamsburg Waterfront.

The show was extra special as Sonic Youth were joined by opening acts Kurt Vile and Wild Flag, and the band played in front of the Manhattan skyline. Guitarist Lee Ranaldo said of the show in a statement, “It was a pretty magical, if kinda weird day. Fitting, somehow, that our ‘last show’ should be in New York City, our home and where it all began.”

The live album was released during the COVID lockdown period on Bandcamp and is now getting a proper release as a remixed and remastered live album. Drummer Steve Shelly shared of the show in a press release, “It turned out to be a pretty special event with a really special song list.”

The ‘Live in Brooklyn 2011’ album is set for release on August 18 via Silver Current and will be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette tape. Fans can also pre-order the album digitally via Goofin’.

The release of this live album comes after former Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore announced the upcoming release of his memoir ‘Sonic Life’ and former bassist and frontwoman Kim Gordon released a new EP with her side project Body/Head titled ‘Come On’.

Fans of Sonic Youth will be delighted to have a chance to listen the band’s final hometown show and revisit the band’s musical legacy.
