Today, Rina Sawayama gave a performance of her single, ‘STFU’, dedicated to Matty Healy at Glastonbury’s Woodsies Stage. She informed the crowd that the song was aimed at a white man who has mocked Asian people on a podcast and also owns her masters.
The man in question is Jamie Oborne, the owner of Dirty Hit, which is the label that Sawayama is signed to. This controversy first arose back in February when Healy was a guest on The Adam Friedland podcast. During which, he made various inflammatory comments about women and talked about Harry Styles “getting a pass” when it comes to “queer-baiting”.
Healy later spoke to the New York Times about the podcast controversy and said that it “doesn’t matter”. He added that nobody was going to be “slumped at their computer” because of it.
In addition to her performance of ‘STFU’, Sawayama covered Limp Bizkit’s ‘Break Stuff’. This was just one of the many surprises that fans were treated to at Glastonbury 2023.
For instance, Oscar-winning actor Tilda Swinton made a guest appearance on stage with Max Richter, but their set was interrupted by a naked protestor. Then, mystery band The Churnups turned out to be the Foo Fighters who took to the Pyramid Stage to perform a one-hour set. During which, frontman Dave Grohl was joined on stage by his daughter Violet to perform ‘Show Me How’ from their latest album, ‘But Here We Are’.
