Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has finally put an end to the speculation surrounding her latest single ‘Vampire’, revealing the inspiration behind the track to her devoted fanbase.
The rock opera-inspired single was released on June 30 and is the lead single from her upcoming second album ‘Guts’, which is due to be released on September 8. Speaking on the record, Rodrigo said that she was “upset about a certain situation” and so decided to make a song about “feeling confused and hurt.”
The track features lyrics that refer to someone as a “bloodsucker, fame fucker”, leading to much speculation about who could be the muse. Some fans suggested that Taylor Swift could be the subject of the song, citing her being credited alongside St. Vincent and Jack Antonoff on the ‘Sour’ album track, ‘Deja Vu’, as evidence of a feud between the two.
Putting the rumours to rest, Rodrigo posted a TikTok on Sunday (July 2) with fellow TikTok comedian Jake Shane, sipping on bright red blood out of a fake hospital-grade “Type A” blood bag. She lip-synced to a popular soundbite from HBO’s Euphoria, saying: “Wait, is this fucking play about us?” She captioned the video, confirming that the song is about Shane.
Others believed that the song could be about one of Rodrigo’s ex-boyfriends, Adam Faze or Zack Bia, who dated her respectively in 2021 and 2022. However, a close source to the ‘Good 4 U’ singer said that the song was not about Faze.
Rodrigo’s debut album ‘Sour’ was released in May 2021 to critical acclaim, with NME writing a four-star review, calling it “equal parts confident, cool and exhilaratingly real.” It went on to win numerous awards, including three Grammys and six wins at the Billboard Music Awards. It was followed by two Disney+ specials: the concert film ‘Sour Prom’ and the documentary ‘Driving Home 2 U (A Sour Film)’.
