Alt-pop singer Ethel Cain, otherwise known as Hayden Anhedönia, has been gaining more attention online since the release of her debut album ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ last year. But despite the influx of fans, the singer has recently expressed that the attention has led to her feeling like “a dancing monkey in a circus”.
Cain has been featured in campaigns for fashion houses like Givenchy, Miu Miu, and Marc Jacobs, which has helped to fuel discussion around her southern, gothic persona. She has participated in jokes and online exchanges around her public image, but has recently spoken out about her feelings towards the attention she has received.
In an interview with The Guardian, Cain comments that while laughter and memes can be fun, the thousands of comments that follow can become overwhelming. She further explains that fans can be disruptive during her live performances, and that their comments can be “jarring”.
The singer has also recently deleted her Twitter after coming to the realization that baring one’s soul online can make one susceptible to fans crossing boundaries and trying to access her through her friends and family.
Cain is currently working on the follow-up to ‘Preacher’s Daughter’. She explains that she is pushing her own envelope in terms of creativity and that she is dedicating herself to the project.
The alt-pop singer recently collapsed on stage during a show in Sydney, but she has since told fans that she is “feeling better”.
