Last night, Coldplay paid tribute to Elton John on the final night of his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour in Stockholm. Through a video broadcast, Chris Martin and the band performed John’s classic ‘Rocket Man’ at Gamla Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. Martin took the opportunity to thank the legendary musician for his significant influence in the music industry, as well as his philanthropy.
“Elton, we want to say from all of us here, from all the fans and all the artists that you’ve loved and inspired and helped, we just love you so much,” Martin said. “We are so grateful for everything you’ve done for us, everything you’ve done for the AIDS Foundation. Every time you’ve been kind to anybody. For everything you’ve done for LGBTQ. Everything you’ve done for fashion and eyewear. Everything you’ve done for sexiness, and love and dressing gowns. Everything you’ve done for music, everything Bernie has done for lyrics, everything your band has done over the thousands of shows you’ve done. We love you so much, happy retirement, and we’re going to miss you so much.”
After the heartfelt tribute, Elton John ended his world tour with a performance of ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’. Before the song, he thanked the audience for their support over his career, saying, “I’ve had the most wonderful career… beyond belief. It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys. You’ve been absolutely magnificent.”
John had previously given one of the best-ever headline sets at Glastonbury 2023, where he was joined by special guests Steven Sanchez, Jacob Lusk from Gabriels, Rina Sawayama and The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers. The performance was a celebration of John’s long-standing career and his influence in the music industry.
The heartfelt tribute from Coldplay was a fitting way to say goodbye to an incredible artist. Sir Elton John has left a lasting impression on the music industry, and his fans will miss him dearly.
