South Korean singer Hwasa of K-pop girl group MAMAMOO has been reported to police over an alleged “indecent performance”.
The Student Parent’s Rights Protection Union has filed a complaint against Hwasa for her performance at the Sungkyunkwan University Festival, which was part of the filming for the tvN series Dancing Queens on the Road, which the singer was a cast member of. The Union alleges that Hwasa’s performance had a “perverted sexual act” that was supposedly witnessed by the public, and they claim it was not part of the choreography.
Seongdong Police Station in Seoul has confirmed that they have received the complaint, and are currently investigating the claims. Hwasa’s agency P Nation has released a statement saying that they understand the police are “reviewing the case”.
Just days before the scandal, Hwasa had left long-time agency RBW to join P Nation, the K-pop agency founded by ‘Gangnam Style’ singer Psy. She is the second MAMAMOO member to leave RBW, following Wheein in 2021. Wheein had agreed to an “extended agreement” where she would remain a part of MAMAMOO until at least December 2023.
Fans of the popular girl group have been outraged by the complaint and have taken to social media to express their support for Hwasa and their disappointment in the Union’s allegations. The K-pop star has yet to make a comment on the controversy.
