Global pop sensation Sam Smith has just been announced as the latest surprise addition to the soundtrack for the highly-anticipated Barbie movie. The singer will be representing the Kens in the film with their song ‘Man I Am’, which is set to be released on the same day as the film: July 21.
Sam Smith made the announcement yesterday (July 10) and expressed their excitement for the project, saying, “I cannot begin to express how incredibly excited I am to be a part of the soundtrack to this already iconic film.” Smith was invited on board by producer Mark Ronson and director Greta Gerwig to write a song from the perspective of Ken.
The announcement of Sam Smith’s involvement follows Billie Eilish’s teaser of her contribution to the soundtrack, ‘What Was I Made For?’. Other artists featured in the soundtrack are Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice with ‘Barbie World’, Karol G with ‘Watati’, PinkPanteress with ‘Angel’, and Charli XCX with ‘Speed Drive’. Dua Lipa also released the lead single for the film, ‘Dance The Night’, back in May.
Adding to the soundtrack’s star-studded line-up is Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who appears on a track sung by leading actor Ryan Gosling titled ‘I’m Just Ken’. Barbie premiered in Los Angeles yesterday and has received praise for its “funny, bombastic and very smart” qualities. The film stars Margot Robbie, Will Ferrell, and Helen Mirren, and carries a UK 12A rating for its use of “moderate innuendo”, “brief sexual harassment”, “violence”, and “dangerous behaviour”.
In other news, Sam Smith recently released a collaboration with pop icon Madonna titled ‘Vulgar’, which was released via Capitol last month. Fans of the singer are sure to be delighted to see them in the soundtrack for the much-anticipated Barbie movie.
