Alex James, bassist for the iconic Britpop band Blur, recently shared a video of him playing the classic 1998 football song ‘Vindaloo’ at Wembley Stadium during the band’s soundcheck for their headline show there. The track was co-written by James, actor Keith Allen, and bassist Guy Pratt, and served as the debut single for the band Fat Les, a collaboration between James, Allen, and artist Damien Hirst.
The song, which was initially a parody of football chants, has since become a fan favorite and was even named one of the 10 best-selling songs of 1998 by NME. It’s success has been described as a “mad achievement” and a “post-modern celebration of life in all its ridiculousness”.
In other news, Blur recently announced the details of a special London gig, ‘Blur present: The Ballad of Darren’, which will see them perform their new album in full. The show, which will be livestreamed globally, will take place at London’s Eventim Apollo on July 25th.
NME recently reviewed Blur’s show at Wembley Stadium, calling it an “utter joy” and gave it a five-star rating. The review further expressed that Blur’s music has a “real emotional impact” on their fans, making it clear why their music has been so popular for so long.
