Acclaimed singer, songwriter and now screenwriter, Meg Washington, is in the spotlight with a slew of upcoming projects. Her new single, ‘Eastcoaster’, was released today (July 13).

The track is a tribute to the singer’s connection to the east coast of Australia, and features a country music-inspired sound. Strings back up lyrics that allude to true-life experiences and real moments in time. ‘Eastcoaster’ is Washington’s first release since 2020 album, ‘Batflowers’, which earned her an ARIA for Best Cover Art. It was worked on with producer Alex Henricksson.

“Writing this song was the first glimmer of something new for me – a feeling of leaning into country, finding more space, being more sonically experimental. It was the first time Alex and I had worked together, and I just had this deep sense of being in exactly the right place. That’s what the song’s about. Being in exactly the right place,” Washington shared.

Washington is currently hard at work on her fifth studio album. Her last piece of music, a covers album of The Killers’ ‘Hot Fuss’, was released in December 2022. Additionally, she is collaborating with Rebel Wilson on the upcoming musical comedy The Deb, which Wilson is producing, directing and co-starring in. Washington co-wrote the screenplay and created several songs for the movie’s soundtrack, which will be released via a new label in partnership with Warner Music. The Deb will start shooting in Australia in September.

The multi-talented artist is also set to bring Paul Kelly’s iconic Christmas song ‘How to Make Gravy’ to the big screen. Washington and her partner Nick Waterman will co-write the script and co-produce the movie with Warner Bros Australia. Casting for the film is almost finalized.
