Troye Sivan is back with his new single ‘Rush’ and the accompanying music video, which has been met with some criticism regarding its lack of body diversity.
The Australian pop star, who is set to release his first album in five years, ‘Something To Give Each Other’, spoke to Billboard about the reaction to the clip, saying: “I definitely hear the critique. To be honest, it just wasn’t a thought we had — we obviously weren’t saying, ‘We want to have one specific type of person in the video.’ We just made the video, and there wasn’t a ton of thought put behind that.”
The 28-year-old also responded to comments in a Vulture review which appeared to be body-shaming, saying: “That really bummed me out to read that — because I’ve had my own insecurities with my body image. I think that everyone’s body is as beautiful as it is, including my own, and it just sucks to see people talking about other people’s bodies.”
The new music video was described by the singer as “the feeling of kissing a sweaty stranger on a dance floor, a two hour date that turned into a weekend, a crush, a winter, a summer. Party after party, after party after party. All of my experiences from a chapter where I feel confident, free and liberated. Independent, yet somehow the most connected to the music and community around me.”
Fans of Troye Sivan can catch him performing his rendition of George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ in the finale of The Idol, a TV series created by The Weeknd and Sam Levinson. He also performed his 2018 track ‘1999’ with Charli XCX at her Coachella set earlier this year.
Sivan’s highly anticipated album ‘Something To Give Each Other’ will be released on October 13 via EMI Music Australia.
