Shakira is under investigation for the second time for alleged tax fraud in Spain. Prosecutors allege that the singer was living in Spain for more than half of the year from 2012 to 2014 and should have been paying taxes, a claim she has denied. She maintains her fiscal residence was in the Bahamas at the time and has said she paid what she owed.

The Spanish authorities are now investigating Shakira on two more counts of alleged tax fraud in 2018. A trial date has not yet been set for the first case, but if found guilty, she faces up to eight years and two months in prison. Her representatives have said that she has always been transparent about her finances and abided by the law.

In her most recent track ‘Bzrp Music Sessions 53’, Shakira may have referenced the situation with lines such as ‘being left with your mom as a neighbour, the press at the door and a debt with the taxman.’ Gerard Pique, Shakira’s ex-husband who is not connected to the charges, is based in Spain.

The song has since gone viral, with fans around the world streaming and downloading the track. Although her legal troubles continue, Shakira is remaining positive and is confident that her innocence will be proven in court.
