Revered English rock band Blur have recently released their ninth studio album ‘The Ballad Of Darren’ and have been touring the UK and Europe in celebration of their new music. Bassist Alex James recently reflected on the difference between life on the road and being a full-time parent, claiming that the band bubble is a lot more “relaxing” than parenting.
In an interview with Parenting Hell podcast, the 54-year-old musician, who is father to five children, said: “Playing the bass in a rock band is the easiest thing, compared to parenting. It actually is relaxing going back into that Blur bubble.”
James also spoke of the dramatic parties his children have thrown, and how they have a much more “rock ‘n’ roll” lifestyle than he does. “I think 16th birthdays are the worst of them all, all the years of rock ‘n’ roll, nothing can hold a candle to those parties when you’re like 16… rock ‘n’ roll had nothing on that actually,” he said. “At 16, you’re in the speedboat and you want to know how fast it goes, and by the time you’re 18 you’ve kind of worked out where your limits are a little bit.”
The new record, ‘The Ballad Of Darren’, has received a four-star review from NME, and the band have been playing a number of shows in the UK to celebrate, including two massive dates at Wembley Stadium. Blur will be performing the album in full at a special livestreamed gig at London’s Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith this Saturday (July 25), before a run of European festival dates and appearances in Asia and South America.
From their humble beginnings in the late 80s, Blur have gone from strength to strength and are now one of the most revered English rock bands. It comes as no surprise that even after all these years, they still evoke the same feeling of excitement and anticipation in their fans.
