Pop sensation Lizzo recently made headlines after three of her dancers filed a lawsuit against her for sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. According to the dancers’ lawyer, they are currently reviewing at least six new complaints about the singer from employees who had toured with her and worked on her reality show.
The allegations include a “sexually charged environment” and failure to pay employees, as well as Lizzo supposedly calling out a dancer’s weight at South By Southwest during a post-show meeting. The lawsuit was filed by Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, who had all worked for Lizzo until earlier this year. It included an incident of sexual harassment that took place in a strip club in Amsterdam, which the dancers visited after a show.
The suit states that Lizzo “began inviting cast members to take turns touching the nude performers, catching dildos launched from the performers’ vaginas, and eating bananas protruding from the performers’ vaginas,” and that she “began pressuring Ms. Davis to touch the breasts of one of the nude women.” It also alleges that the singer subjected the group to an “excruciating” audition after falsely accusing them of drinking on the job.
Williams and Rodriguez later claimed that they had tried to settle the disagreement “in-house” before filing a lawsuit, but were met with a “rebuttal” from Lizzo’s team. Lizzo’s lawyer called the lawsuit “specious” while the singer herself said she was “hurt” and denied the allegations. She added that she is “very open with her sexuality and expressing herself” but that she cannot accept people using that to “make her out to be something she is not.”
The three dancers responded to her statement, saying it was “disheartening” to read. They further emphasized that their intention was not to portray Lizzo as the villain, but to instead highlight their experience with her and the hostile work environment they faced.
The lawsuit has sparked a conversation among fans of the artist, who have debated the allegations. It has also highlighted important issues such as the importance of creating safe and respectful work environments for everyone.
