Legendary Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s mother Louise was reportedly “disgusted” by the fan reaction during the band’s live shows. In a letter she wrote to a young fan called Janet Gray, Louise detailed her frustrations with the audience’s reaction.
The letters written between 1963 and 1966 are set to be auctioned off to the highest bidder at the Liverpool Beatles Memorabilia Auction. In the letter to Janet, Louise shared her feelings about how the audience would scream and not hear any of the music that was being performed. She also shared her belief that people should not pay and queue for a ticket only to scream and not appreciate the show.
Louise’s advice to Janet was to remember that her mother was her best friend, even if they did not always agree. She was thankful that she had a good relationship with her four children and that they all got along.
The Beatles were met with controversy when John Lennon made the comment that the band was “more popular than Jesus” in a London Evening Standard interview in 1966. Louise expressed her concern for her son’s safety during the tour of the US and hoped that the band would have a successful tour despite the rumours.
Fans of The Beatles are sure to be interested in the upcoming auction where they can purchase a piece of history. George Harrison’s mother Louise was a dedicated fan of the band and was known to invite fans into her home to talk about her son’s success.
In November 2022, a concert film dedicated to George Harrison will be re-released in cinemas across the world. In the meantime, fans of the band can enjoy a playlist of Harrison’s jukebox from 1965, created from an archive interview.
