Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known by his stage name Hozier, is showing his support for actors and writers currently on strike in the US. These actors and writers are fighting for better contracts and protection against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry.
Hozier recently spoke to BBC Newsnight’s Victoria Derbyshire on the topic of AI and its impact on the music industry. He explained that although he is unsure if AI can create art, he is willing to join similar action in solidarity. He believes that AI can be used to create a product without human labour, and that this is an issue which should be addressed.
This comes after Nick Cave expressed his dislike of using AI to write songs, saying it was a “grotesque mockery of what it means to be human”. Noel Gallagher responded to the AI-generated “lost” Oasis album that was released earlier this year, jokingly saying that he was “saving up for the technology himself”.
Hozier’s third studio album, Unreal Unearth, was released earlier this month and has been praised by fans and critics alike. NME gave the album a four-star review, saying that “no matter where he goes, Hozier makes the journey worthwhile.”
As AI continues to be used more and more in the entertainment industry, it will be interesting to see how Hozier and other artists will respond to this threat.
