Ashnikko and Ethel Cain’s collaboration on ‘Dying Star’ was “magical” according to the alt-pop superstar. The track is the closing number of Ashnikko’s debut album ‘WEEDKILLER’, and is based on a short story written by the singer about a race of AI robots that destroy a fae forest.
Speaking to NME, Ashnikko shared the story behind the song, explaining how the lyrics for the first verse spontaneously came to them during a session, but they weren’t sure what to do with the idea. However, when they played the verse to Ethel, the two were able to create the song together.
The track is the perfect conclusion to the LP, providing a glimmer of optimism amongst the tumultuous narrative arc. Ashnikko shared that the song is meant to represent coming back to a place of hope, and wanting kindness and softness over violence.
The singer also discussed the decision to adopt the Ashnikko persona, saying it helps them to separate their personal life from the music.
To commemorate their NME cover story, Ashnikko has shared a playlist exclusively to accompany the article. They said to imagine shrinking down to insect size and having a drink of dewdrop from a dandelion flower, to be in awe of the enormity of the flower forest and the earth it’s on.
