Global music superstar Shakira will be honored at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, having been presented with the Video Vanguard Award.

The 2023 VMAs will take place on Tuesday, September 12 at 8pm ET at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The Video Vanguard Award has been won in the past by other music notables such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez, and Missy Elliott, and was last awarded to Nicki Minaj in 2022.

Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, and SZA are all among the nominees for this year’s VMAs, leading the pack with 8, 6, and 5 nominations respectively. Other nominees include Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Smith, and 35 first-time nominees, such as Metro Boomin, Boygenius, Fletcher, Rema, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Kaliii, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress, and Reneé Rapp.

Shakira is currently being investigated in Spain for alleged tax fraud for the second time. Prosecutors allege that she should have been paying tax in Spain due to living there for more than half the year between 2012 and 2014. The singer has maintained that her fiscal residence was in the Bahamas and has insisted that she had already paid what she owed.

Shakira is an iconic figure in the music industry, having released some of the world’s most popular songs, and her fans across the globe look forward to seeing her receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 VMAs.
