Ghostwriter has recently sent an AI-generated collaboration to the Grammys, featuring vocals mimicking that of Drake and The Weeknd. The song, titled ‘Heart On My Sleeve’, started to pick up steam when it first released earlier this year, gathering 13 million views on TikTok and hundreds of thousands of streams on popular DSPs like Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal. However, it was then blocked from the web by Universal Music Group.
Now, it has been revealed that the track has been submitted for Grammy consideration in two categories: Best Rap Song and Song Of The Year. This is possible as the song was written and recorded by humans, satisfying the eligibility requirement of the Recording Academy that the track must be available nationwide.
The anonymous producer has also teased a new AI collaboration featuring vocals mimicking Travis Scott and 21 Savage entitled ‘Whiplash’. They appealed to both artists to allow them to release the song, offering to direct royalties to them and to label the track as AI.
The use of AI to create music has been heavily debated recently. While John Lydon, Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones and Nick Cave have expressed their disapproval, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan has said that it will “change music forever” as it allows for the production of music without the need to spend 10,000 hours in a basement.
It will be interesting to see if the Grammys will accept the AI-generated track, and the implications this will have on the music industry as a whole.
