Marika Hackman has just released her first single in four years, ‘No Caffeine’. This uplifting track is the first of her new material since her 2019 album ‘Any Human Friend’.

The artist said of the song: “’No Caffeine’ is a list of what to do to avoid having a panic attack and looking at my anxiety as an abusive partner.” The chorus of the track states: “Occupy your mind / Don’t stay home / Talk to all your friends, but don’t look at your phone / Scream into a bag / Try to turn your brain off.”

To accompany the single, Marika Hackman also released a video for the song. The visual opens with her getting a bloody nose before she is physically sick.

Last year, Marika Hackman released a covers album as a way to stay creative during the pandemic. The record was entitled ‘Covers’ and featured songs from a variety of artists such as Grimes, The Shins, Sharon Van Etten and Beyoncé.

In an interview with NME, Hackman said: “I wanted to spend the majority of lockdown writing my fourth album, but I found it very hard to be creative in that way: to start with a blank page and make something out of nothing. A lot of musicians and creatives I’ve spoken to have found it to be a really uninspiring time.”

Reviews of the album were generally positive, with NME awarding it four stars and stating: “Intimate and inventive, it’s a beautiful exercise – and one that could provide a bridge between last year’s ‘Any Human Friend’ and the musician’s planned return to melancholic material on her next original work.”

Marika Hackman has certainly kept people engaged with her music over the last few years, and fans are sure to be excited for the next album.
