Noel Gallagher has been hit with a six-month driving ban, despite never actually learning to drive. The iconic Britpop musician and lead singer of Oasis and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is well-known for relying on a chauffeur-driven Range Rover, which set him back a cool £120,000.
Back in the mid-90s, Gallagher decided against taking up the wheel, and recently he has been penalized for multiple speeding offences. In June, he was issued a £742 fine and court fees totalling £396, along with six penalty points on his licence.
Yesterday, the Lavender Hill Magistrates Court heard two further speeding tickets which had been issued earlier this year, and as a result, Gallagher accrued a further 12 penalty points and was ordered to pay a total of £1,986 in fines, prosecution costs and court fees.
Gallagher was unable to attend the hearing due to work commitments abroad, but submitted a letter to the court, wherein he accepted responsibility for not responding to police letters, but made no mention of not having a licence. His driver, Alan Neeson, also wrote to the court to explain the situation, citing postal strikes as a contributing factor.
In an interview with Zoe Ball earlier this year, Gallagher explained why he gave up on getting his licence, saying that it was due to the amount of Oasis fans gathering around his car. “I was like, ‘Never, never again am I getting in a car’” he said.
The musician has also previously revealed that he has turned down the offer to host the British television panel show, Have I Got News For You, out of fear of not being able to compete with the show’s panellists.
