Kendrick Lamar fans were left outraged after a white singer performed a controversial rendition of the artist’s hit single ‘Humble’ on a Spanish TV show. The performance, which aired on the show ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’, saw Polish singer Kuba Szmajkowski don blackface and use the N-word during his routine.
The singer made a dramatic transformation by wearing a bald cap and fake cornrows, before applying blackface makeup. Three images of the real rapper were also visible next to the mirror. Szmajkowski then opted not to censor the offensive word in the televised performance.
Viewers were left aghast by the singer’s transformation and subsequent performance, with one person writing: “You can appreciate the culture or the art without being offensive or doing blackface FFS.” Another user added: “This is top racism. Do you not see how inappropriate this is? Not to mention offensive? Wrong. Stop it.”
Szmajkowski went on to win the 19th season of the show, despite the backlash. The programme had previously seen white singers emulate the likes of Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley and Tina Turner.
Kendrick Lamar recently made a live performance with Beyoncé in Los Angeles, debuting their ‘AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM’ remix. The rapper also made an appearance at the Governors Ball in New York City last June, with fans from all over the city coming together to dance and sing in unison. The performance was hailed as “one of the most lively performances of the weekend” by a four-star review.
