Tinashe has recently opened up about her uncomfortable experience with working with R. Kelly and Chris Brown when she was signed to RCA label. The 30-year-old singer shared her feelings in an interview with Zach Sang about her latest album, ‘BB/ANG3L’.
When asked if those collaborations with the two controversial artists were something she was obligated to do, Tinashe replied laughing, “You think I wanted to?”. She revealed that she tries to block out the song with R. Kelly, stating that it’s “so embarrassing”. She also shared that she was only 20 when she recorded the song and had just signed to the label.
Sang mentioned that the public may have thought Tinashe was doing it willingly while having no control over the situation. The alt-R&B-pop star agreed, saying that when it came to singles, the label thought she needed the support of Chris Brown, who was their biggest artist at that time. However, she didn’t think it was necessary as it was a pop song. Unfortunately, the single ‘Player’ failed to do well on the charts, only peaking at 84 in the UK.
Chris Brown responded to the interview by leaving a comment under the viral clip, saying “Name five Tinashe songs or die… Everybody dead”. Brown has been accused of numerous assaults against women, the latest being in 2021. Meanwhile, R. Kelly is currently serving 31 years in jail for racketeering and trafficking, and owning and producing child pornography.
Despite the unpleasant experiences with her former label, Tinashe is now an independent artist and has recently dropped her sixth album ‘BB/ANG3L’. The record follows her 2021 fifth album ‘333’, which gained four stars from NME.
