Talking Heads have discussed the potential of a reunion after making their first public appearance together in over 20 years. The iconic band made their reunion for a Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their legendary concert film Stop Making Sense (1984).

During an interview, bassist Tina Weymouth said the band are “just savouring the moment” and not looking too far into the future. Guitarist Jerry Harrison added that the reunion “revives the joy” they had together, and frontman David Byrne revealed that he was a “little tyrant” at the time of the band’s split.

Byrne also compared his current relationship to his former bandmates to a divorce, saying “Divorces are never easy. We get along OK. It’s all very cordial and whatever. It’s not like we’re all best friends.”

Chris Frantz previously revealed that he had tried to reunite the band a couple of times in the past 20 years, but was denied by Byrne. Harrison said that the re-release of Stop Making Sense has acted as a “healing experience” for the band, and that they are united in the fact that they love what they did together.

Byrne also discussed why Stop Making Sense marked their final tour as a band, saying: “It was hard to think about how we could top this. That was the looming question. We didn’t have an immediate answer. Maybe in time we might have figured out a way to not get compared to this incredible thing we did, but immediately afterwards, it was like, oh man. Couldn’t think of anything.”

The Talking Heads have had a complicated relationship since their breakup in 1991. Despite this, fans of the band remain hopeful for a possible reunion, and await any further news.
