Bob Dylan Makes Special Appearance at Farm Aid, Performs for First Time in 14 Years

Bob Dylan made a special appearance at Farm Aid last night (September 23), his first time at the charity concert since it was first conceived. The event, which was started by Willie Nelson and has been running since 1985, raises money to support family farmers in the US. The idea was sparked by Dylan during his performance at Live Aid, when he realized that a similar event could be put together to help American farmers.

Dylan performed at the first two Farm Aid events in 1985 and 1986, alongside Neil Young and John Mellencamp. He was accompanied by the Heartbreakers at this year’s show, playing a three-song set including “Maggie’s Farm” for the first time in 14 years, as well as “Positively 4th Street” and “Ballad of a Thin Man”. The set was streamed live on YouTube and can be viewed below.

Just last month, producer Michael Cash revealed that Dylan had given Post Malone his unused lyrics for a track that was never finished. Cash wanted to create his own version of the 2014 Bob Dylan tribute album, ‘Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes’, which included tracks from Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, and Rhiannon Giddens. His project, ‘The Attic MP3s’, would have featured performances from Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Post Malone, but it was never released. Dylan’s team had approved Malone’s involvement and even sent him lyrics to work with.
