Talking Heads Reunite After Over Two Decades: Could a Concert Be on the Horizon?

Talking Heads recently made their second public reunion appearance as guests on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. After over two decades apart, the band – comprised of drummer Chris Franz, frontman David Byrne, guitarist Jerry Harrison and bassist Tina Weymouth – first reunited for a Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.

The band discussed the release of their debut album, ‘Talking Heads: 77’, with Franz recalling some of the earlier shows in their career. From playing in empty shopping malls to pizza parlours and even a chain restaurant called Beefsteak Charlie’s, Franz and Byrne recounted a show they played at a pizza place with an opening act who became drunk during their first set. Weymouth added that she and Harrison were even dressed in the same outfits as the waiters at the Beefsteak Charlie’s show.

The band’s appearance on the late night show was in celebration of the 40th anniversary of their legendary concert film, Stop Making Sense (1984). When asked if a Talking Heads reunion concert may be happening in the future, Weymouth replied that the audience would “be still waiting” – a reference to the band’s 1980 track ‘Crosseyed and Painless’.

Franz also recently hinted at another potential reunion with a post of Byrne and Weymouth, captioning it “a picture is worth a billion words”. Although Weymouth said in a recent interview that the band are “just savouring the moment”, it seems that there could be more to come from the legendary rock veterans.
