South Korean superstar G-Dragon, a member of the iconic K-pop boyband Big Bang, has denied allegations of drug use. On October 27, the 35-year-old singer’s attorney released a statement asserting his innocence.
“I’ve never used drugs,” G-Dragon, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, said in the statement. “I’ll actively cooperate with the police investigation since I know well that many people are worried about me.”
Earlier, G-Dragon was booked by the Incheon Metropolitan Police as part of an investigation for alleged breach of South Korea’s Narcotics Control Act. This probe is separate from another ongoing drug investigation involving South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun.
To combat the recent surge of drug-related allegations in the Korean entertainment industry, K-pop agencies such as Big Hit Music (BTS), Source Music (LE SSERAFIM), and CUBE Entertainment ((G)I-DLE) have released statements denying any links.
The drug allegations against G-Dragon and Lee Sun-kyun come not long after the high-profile investigation into actor Yoo Ah-in. Yoo was subsequently dropped from season two of Hellbound, and his role of Jung Jin-su was replaced by Kim Sung-cheol of Our Beloved Summer.
G-Dragon’s latest denial of drug use has reassured his millions of fans around the world, who have followed him with admiration since his debut with Big Bang back in 2006. His reputation as one of the most influential K-pop artists of all time remains strong and unwavering.
