Sharon Van Etten has dropped a powerful new single ‘Close To You’, which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett. The pair worked together to write the song for the upcoming Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers, which is due to air on November 8. The soundtrack for the show is set to feature an all-female lineup of artists produced by Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, including the likes of Lucius, Gracie Abrams, and Miya Folick.
Van Etten took to Instagram to express her feelings towards writing the song with her friend Barnett. She wrote, “It was really an inspiring time to get to write a song with my dear friend Courtney and bring it to life with our fellow cohorts Zach Dawes [The Last Shadow Puppets bassist] and Stella Mozgawa for the show Buccaneers airing very soon,” she wrote. “I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
The admiration between the two artists is mutual, as Barnett teamed up with Vagabon to cover Van Etten’s ‘Don’t Do It’. In response, Van Etten praised Barnett for her unique writing style and praised her for being an ear of support. She said, “Courtney Barnett has been an important musical influence on me since 2014, when we first met at The Neptune theater in Seattle.”
Van Etten also recently announced the reissue of her critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Tramp’ from 2012. She shared a previously unseen music video for ‘Serpents’, which was never released due to her insecurities about facing her demons.
Van Etten spoke to NME last year about writing her album ‘We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong’ during the pandemic. She spoke of how her songs were written through a period of collective trauma and how she struggles with being overly political in her music due to the emotionally raw space it comes from.
Overall, the collaboration between Sharon Van Etten and Courtney Barnett has been a powerful one, and music fans can expect to hear more from them in the future.
