After nearly three decades, the mystery of Tupac Shakur’s death is still unsolved. On September 29th, Duane “Keffe D” Davis was charged in the 1996 murder of the legendary rapper. Davis pleaded not guilty during a court appearance in Las Vegas and is now represented by a lawyer.
Tupac was shot on the night of September 7th, 1996, after leaving the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight at the MGM Grand and heading to a nightclub with Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight. As the pair drove, a white Cadillac pulled up on the passenger side, and an unidentified gunman fired 14 shots. The 25-year-old rapper was hit four times and later died from his injuries.
Davis is a former member of the Compton Crips gang and the uncle of the late Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Anderson had previously been identified as a suspect in Shakur’s murder, but was never charged with any crimes. He was killed in a shooting in 1998.
After his arrest in September, Las Vegas police showed hotel security footage of several men kicking and punching a man identified as Anderson. It is believed that this altercation was the catalyst for Shakur’s murder as retaliation.
Davis has admitted in multiple interviews and his 2019 memoir “Compton Street Legend” that he was in the Cadillac from which the shots were fired. He is one of the last living witnesses to the shooting.
In July, Las Vegas police raided the home of Davis’ wife, seizing items related to Tupac’s murder. They found several .40-caliber bullets, a Vibe magazine featuring the rapper, two tubs of photographs, and a copy of “Compton Street Legend”.
Las Vegas Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo described Davis as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Tupac. He believes justice will be served in the end, despite the delay.
The 2019 interview with Davis also resurfaced, which shows him recalling the final moments before Tupac was killed in 1996. Suge Knight has also commented on Davis’ arrest, saying he never expected it to happen and that he wouldn’t testify in any eventual trial.
The mystery of Tupac Shakur’s death continues to remain unsolved, but the arrest of Duane “Keffe D” Davis brings the case one step closer to closure.
