Matty Healy, frontman of renowned band The 1975, made headlines when it was revealed that he had missed his mother Denise Welch’s wedding to support The Rolling Stones. The news was made public during an episode of Loose Women, where Welch spoke of the event that had occurred ten years before.
The couple’s third wedding was in July 2013, and it was then that Healy called his mother to tell her he wouldn’t be able to attend. Welch said that she didn’t think she would forgive her son if he wasn’t to support The Rolling Stones, and his decision to do so was ultimately accepted.
The 1975 had just released their self-titled album, which went to Number One in the UK album charts. It was a big moment for the band, and Healy’s mother had previously expressed her doubts about their career success, asking them to get a job unless they were to support The Rolling Stones.
Recently, the Malaysian government put a stop to The 1975’s set at Good Vibes Festival, due to Healy’s criticism of the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws and a kiss shared with bassist Ross McDonald. This led to the singer responding in several ways, from poking fun at the controversy to speaking openly against the idea of catering to local sensitivities.
The 1975 are currently on tour, and recently held a ‘Halloween Party’ concert in Detroit. Fans were treated to a recreation of looks and scenes from iconic films such as American Psycho, The Ring and The Blair Witch Project.
