Zack de la Rocha, the frontman of the legendary rock band Rage Against The Machine, made a powerful statement on Saturday (November 4) by joining a protest of 300,000 people in Washington DC march in support of Palestinian self-determination and a ceasefire in the region.
The renowned hardcore videographer hate5six posted a photo on Twitter of himself with de la Rocha, indicating that the artist had decided to miss the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in order to join the march. He wrote, “We talked for a while about how this is a tipping point in history. People are waking up to how interconnected the fight for liberation is, from Ferguson to Gaza.”
Guitarist Tom Morello was the only member of the band to attend the induction ceremony, using the opportunity to speak about how music can be used as a tool for social justice. In his speech, he acknowledged the current events in the Middle East and was seen backstage holding his trophy as well as a note that read “Ceasefire”. Morello also called for the condemnation of harm to all children, “no matter who they are”.
Last month, de la Rocha joined Run the Jewels on stage in Los Angeles to perform a version of their collaboration, ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)’. His decision to join the march in Washington DC is a powerful reminder of the band’s commitment to using their platform to fight for social justice and their continued influence on the music industry.
