Soft Play have revealed their new single ‘Punk’s Dead’ and confirmed their upcoming performance at Reading & Leeds 2023. The duo, formerly known as Slaves, consists of Laurie Vincent and Isaac Holman, and they have been getting fans excited for their return to music since December 2022.
The new single is a raucous track that sees the pair tackling the controversy around their new name. It also features an unlikely guest appearance from Robbie Williams, who sings: “I love you but I disagree / this is bullshit / and I just wanted you to know / snowflake, snowflake / cherries on the woke cake / but I’ll still see you at your show.” The band told BBC Radio 1 that Williams was a fan of the group and wanted to collaborate with them.
Soft Play will also be performing sets at Reading & Leeds this year, following their comeback show at Tunbridge Wells Forum and their headline slot at 2000 Trees Festival. They will be performing on the Festival Republic Stage at Reading on August 26 and Leeds on August 27. The band will also be supporting The Prodigy on tour this autumn.
The pair previously defended their original band name, ‘Slaves’, to NME saying that it was intended solely as a reference to the grind of day-to-day life. However, they later recognised the issue with the name and apologised for any offence caused.
Soft Play have shared a full list of their 2023 tour dates, which includes their performance at Reading & Leeds and a series of shows with The Prodigy. Isaac Holman also spoke out about his mental health in August 2022, sharing an emotional post about his struggles. He reminded fans that you never know what’s going on in someone’s head and encouraged people to approach each other with kindness.
