Ashnikko, the alt-pop powerhouse, has been making waves in the music industry with the release of their debut album, ‘WEEDKILLER’. In a recent interview backstage at Reading Festival 2023, the artist opened up about their “beautiful” friendship with fellow singer-songwriter Ethel Cain.
The two hit the studio together earlier this year, resulting in expansive closer ‘Dying Star’, a song that speaks to themes of desire and resolution. Ashnikko shared that they had already been a fan of Cain’s work, praising her “beautiful voice” and her production on the track. “It makes you feel like you’re in a cave but also in church in the middle of the Earth, but also like you’re in a forest at midnight,” they said. “That’s how it feels listening to her sing.”
The artist also discussed the journey to the release of ‘WEEDKILLER’. They shared that they had taken the time to really think through the songs on the album and pour everything into the visuals. Ashnikko added that their songwriting approach was different for this album, and they were proud of the hard work they had put in.
The pop powerhouse has been a regular at Reading Festival, appearing for the third consecutive year in 2023. They performed a surprise set in the Festival Republic tent. Fans of Ashnikko and Cain can keep an eye on NME for more updates from Reading & Leeds 2023!
