The Rolling Stones have unveiled their first album of original music in sixteen years, ‘Hackney Diamonds’. On their livestream from the Hackney Empire, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood discussed the new record, which was produced by Andrew Watt.
Mick Jagger reflected on the band’s humble beginnings, when they invited a journalist from the NME and Melody Maker to a pub in Denmark Street, buying them both a pint and handing them their album to “mixed reviews”. They revealed the new album and single ‘Angry’, which features Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney in its video.
Sweeney expressed her delight at being chosen for the video, saying she called her family and brought her mum to the shoot. Jagger said of the album: “We said we had to make a record we really love ourselves. We are quite pleased with it, we are not big-headed about it, but we hope you all like it.”
The album was recorded in various locations including Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, London’s Metropolis Studios, Sanctuary Studios in the Bahamas, Electric Lady Studios and The Hit Factory/Germano Studios in New York. It contains twelve tracks, two written by former drummer Charlie Watts, and was wrapped up by mid-2023.
Last month, the new record was teased with a cryptic ad in a local newspaper, before the band released an augmented reality video clip and website. They also released a snippet of their new single, ‘Angry’, via a website called dontgetangrywithme.com.
The Rolling Stones’ last album was a blues covers LP, ‘Blue & Lonesome’ (2016). The band celebrated frontman Mick Jagger’s 80th birthday with Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Nile Rodgers offering their best wishes.
Fans can pre-order the album, which is available on a limited RS No.9 Carnaby Red vinyl, directly from the flagship store. ‘Hackney Diamonds’ will be released on October 20th.
