David Fincher’s upcoming film The Killer is set to feature a soundtrack composed of tracks by iconic British band The Smiths. Starring Michael Fassbender as a troubled assassin, the movie is based on the French graphic novel by Alexis Nolent, and adapted for the screen by Andrew Kevin Walker, who previously worked with Fincher on Seven.
At the Venice Film Festival, Fincher explained his reasoning for adding The Smiths to the soundtrack. “The Smiths were a post-production addition because I knew I wanted to use ‘How Soon Is Now?’ and I love the idea of that song specifically as a tool for assuaging his anxiety,” Fincher said. He added that he wanted to use the music to provide an insight into Fassbender’s character, as it offers a combination of “sardonic nature and wit”.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have composed the film’s score, while Fincher has previously worked with them on the soundtracks for The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl and Mank.
The Killer marks Fassbender’s first role since 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, after the actor pursued auto racing in 2017. He’s also due to star in Taika Waititi’s upcoming film Next Goal Wins. Fincher has played down any notion of this being a “comeback” for Fassbender, though, saying that they were “lucky” to fit the movie in between his racing seasons.
The Killer will be released in select cinemas on October 28, before arriving on Netflix from November 10. Fans of The Smiths’ music, as well as Fincher and Fassbender’s work, will likely be delighted to see the two come together on this project.
