ScHoolboy Q is an acclaimed rapper and golfer, who has been part of hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy alongside Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar. While the latter left Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) last year, Q has recently stepped away from the limelight and is now focusing on his solo career.
Recently, the LA-based artist opened up about why he doesn’t produce new music as frequently as his peers. On the podcast BackOnFigg, he revealed that he “never looked at this industry as a sport” and explained that “me talking about our situations, y’know, the shit we done been through, homies we done lost to the system or to the streets” is not something that can be compared to the success of a sports team.
Q went on to talk about his time with A$AP Rocky in the studio and how they “had no fans”, yet managed to make cult rap classics. He believes that “when it comes to music”, he “doesn’t look at it as like, ‘Oh, you have to drop every year’” and says he does what he wants because he wants to move off of his “experiences”.
When discussing his last album, ‘CrasH Talk’, the 36-year-old admitted it was “[his] least introspective album” and that it left him feeling “empty”. On the contrary, it performed extremely well.
In 2020 and 2021, ScHoolboy Q collaborated with the Gorillaz on ‘Pac-Man’ and with Freddie Gibbs on ‘Gang Signs’. He also shared how golf has changed his outlook on life, calling it “a golf game” and saying that “some good shots, some bad shots”, but “most importantly, keep going you never know”.
