Fans of classic glam rock rejoice! The highly anticipated documentary AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex is set for release later this month, and to get us in the mood, an exclusive clip has been released. Directed and written by Ethan Silverman, the film promises to be an exuberant and thoughtful celebration of the iconic rocker.
The clip showcases an archival performance of Bolan rehearsing ‘The Children Of Rarn’ from T. Rex’s 1970 self-titled album, as well as an interview with Bolan himself discussing the influence of musicians Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. The documentary will also feature interviews and performances from U2, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Ringo Starr, Nick Cave, Elton John, David Bowie, and Bolan’s last partner Gloria Jones.
Produced by Bill Curbishley, the film is an attempt to move Bolan “from footnote to headline” and to recognize his enduring influence. Silverman spoke of Bolan’s “unique spin on Rock & Roll, use of rhythm, poetic wordplay, and gender fluid fearlessness” as indicators of why his music still resonates today.
Sadly, Bolan didn’t get to see the documentary himself, as he passed away in a car crash in 1977 at the age of 29. He is survived by his son Rolan, and in 2020 was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of T. Rex.
AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex will be available in UK cinemas for one night only on September 14. It will be released widely on September 22, and available on streaming services from November 6, 2023.
