Pop star Bebe Rexha has revealed she may not attend the MTV VMAs tonight (September 12), due to feeling anxious about being in the public eye.
In a heartfelt video shared on TikTok yesterday, Rexha opened up about her reservations and how public scrutiny over her weight has been impacting her mental health.
The singer expressed her gratitude for being able to do what she loves and attend awards shows, but said that “sometimes it does get to me, I am human.” She continued, saying that while people will often praise her “positivity and confidence”, she is “not feeling so confident” at the moment.
In her plea to her fans, Rexha asked for any “motivational tips or tricks” to help her feel more confident about attending the VMAs.
In this year’s ceremony, Taylor Swift, Doja Cat and SZA lead the list of nominations, with Swift earning eight nods and Doja Cat and SZA both earning six. Meanwhile, Rexha is nominated for ‘I’m Good (Blue)’ with David Guetta in the Best Collaboration category.
Not only has Rexha faced public scrutiny over her weight, but she has also had dangerous incidents on stage, including being struck in the face by a fan’s phone earlier this year. Other high profile stars have also faced similar incidents, with phone, vape, book and dead mother’s ashes being thrown at them during performances.
We hope that Rexha finds the courage and strength to attend the VMAs tonight and feel beautiful and confident in her own skin.
