Mexican artist, Peso Pluma, was forced to cancel his upcoming gig in Tijuana due to death threats from members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The group posted banners on bridges around the city warning the singer of the consequences of performing in the city.
Double P Records and Prajin Music Group, who manage Pluma, released a statement to confirm the cancellation of the show. They urged fans to understand and stated that safety was their top priority. Pluma’s career has been filled with many songs that could be interpreted as praise for the Sinaloa Cartel, but the artist himself has never commented on the matter.
The city of Chihuahua is also introducing fines for live performances of songs that include misogynistic lyrics. This is in response to the “pandemic” of gender-based violence in the city, with the United Nations reporting that ten women and girls are killed every day in Mexico.
The mayor of Chihuahua, Marco Bonilla, posted a video on Facebook stating that seven out of every ten calls made to the city’s emergency services are related to domestic violence. With this in mind, it is important that musicians use their platform to promote a positive message and take a stand against this type of violence.
