Matty Healy, frontman of English rock band The 1975, has recently stirred up controversy online after deleting his X/Twitter account. This followed a heated exchange between Healy and singer Lucy Dacus of the indie-rock supergroup Boygenius.
The exchange began when Healy, on his new account @mattyfrnglomg, shared a post related to Dacus’ band. He wrote that he had told Dacus that Boygenius had inspired him and The 1975 drummer George Daniel to start a new band called ‘Girlretard’, to which Dacus replied, “You don’t hear from me at all.” Healy then referenced the incident in a separate tweet before deactivating his account.
The incident has come after the band were banned from Malaysia mid-performance on Day 1 of Good Vibes Festival earlier this summer. Healy had criticised the Malaysian government for anti-LGBTQ laws during the performance, resulting in the organisers demanding they pay RM12.3million (£2,099,154) in damages.
In addition, Rina Sawayama called out Healy at Glastonbury 2023 and NOS Alive Festival in Portugal, dedicating her song ‘STFU’ to him and mentioning his “racist” and “sexist” comments. She asked him to apologize without making it about himself.
The incident has sparked a heated debate among fans of the band and the indie-rock scene. Many have criticized Healy’s behavior, while others have come to his defense. It remains to be seen whether Healy will issue an apology or reinstate his account.
