The Rolling Stones have achieved another impressive milestone, becoming the first act to have charted top 10 albums in the US for each decade since the 1960s. Their latest release, ‘Hackney Diamonds’, debuted at Number Three on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the 38th time the band has placed in the top 10 of the chart.
At home in the UK, the band have long held the record for the most number one albums in the most decades, with a 2020 reissue of their 1973 album ‘Goats Head Soup’ reaching the top spot, giving them number one albums in six different decades. ‘Hackney Diamonds’ has also reached the top of the UK Albums Chart, their 14th number one in total.
The album features contributions from a number of big names in music, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Lady Gaga. In an interview with NME, Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood reminisced on the recording of ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven’ with Gaga, describing the experience as “very rewarding”.
The Rolling Stones’ success has been recognised this week with the British Phonographic Industry’s BRIT Billion Award, presented for reaching the landmark of one billion career UK streams. As well as their 38 top 10 albums, the band have landed nine number one albums, including ‘Sticky Fingers’, ‘Exile on Main St.’ and ‘Tattoo You’. No other artist has charted in the top 10 for each decade since the 1960s, although Barbra Streisand has the chance to match the achievement if her next album places in the top 10 of the 2020s.
The band recently played a surprise show in New York with Lady Gaga at the 650-capacity Racket venue in Chelsea. The performance received four-star reviews from NME, who described the album as ‘an absolute barnstormer’ and ‘very enjoyable’. It looks like the Rolling Stones’ longevity is really paying off, and they show no signs of stopping any time soon.
