Sir Elton John was left speechless at Manchester Airport on Saturday (June 4), when players and staff from Manchester City broke into a rendition of one of his most iconic songs. The team sang the chorus of ‘Your Song’ while getting their photo taken with the singer, changing the lyrics to: “And you can tell everybody / We’ve won the FA Cup.”
John had been performing in Manchester earlier that week, playing three nights at the city’s AO Arena. He was joined by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola at one of the shows. The team’s win in the FA Cup final provided the perfect opportunity for John to meet them and celebrate their victory.
John shared a photo of the meeting on his Instagram, with the musician smiling and holding the FA Cup. “Congratulations on an incredible double,” he wrote. “Fingers crossed for the treble.” In football, a treble is achieved when a team wins three trophies in a single season. Manchester City have already won the Premier League and will face Inter Milan in the Champions League final next week.
John’s ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour continues on with a headlining performance at Glastonbury at the end of the month. Speaking about the show in a recent interview, John admitted to feeling “a little intimidated” but noted that it would be “the most wonderful way to sign off in England.” The set-list for the Glastonbury show will also be “much different” to the standard set that he has been performing on tour, and he teased that special guests will join him at the festival.
Elton John’s farewell tour is being hailed as one of the greatest of all time, and fans will be sure to give him a fitting send off at Glastonbury.
