Pop star Kesha and producer Dr. Luke have officially put an end to their long-running legal dispute with a recently-reached settlement. The two released a joint statement on their social media pages announcing the agreement, with Kesha writing: “Only God knows what happened that night. I am looking forward to closing the door on this chapter of my life and beginning a new one. I wish nothing but peace to all parties involved.”
Dr. Luke echoed a similar sentiment in his statement, claiming: “I never drugged or assaulted [Kesha] and would never do that to anyone. For the sake of my family, I have vigorously fought to clear my name for nearly 10 years. It is time for me to put this difficult matter behind me and move on with my life. I wish Kesha well.”
Kesha had originally sued Dr. Luke in 2014, alleging that he had sexually assaulted and emotionally abused her. The producer denied these claims and countersued the star, claiming she had breached their recording contract and had invented rape allegations in order to get out of it. The case was due to go to trial the following month.
The details of the settlement remain unknown, however, in a 2020 ruling, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Jennifer G. Schecter had declared that Dr. Luke would be considered a “public figure” in the case, reversing a previous ruling made in 2021 which deemed the producer a private figure as he wasn’t a household name. This meant that Kesha’s lawyers would have to prove she acted with “actual malice” when making her public statements about Dr. Luke.
Kesha celebrated the end of the legal dispute by releasing her fifth studio album, ‘Gag Order’, earlier this year. NME gave the album a three-star review, praising it for being “the embodiment of an artist who has found their voice.” With the legal battle now behind her, fans will be looking forward to hearing more music from the singer-songwriter in the near future.
