“Brazil Introduces ‘Taylor Swift Law’ to Combat Ticket Scalping”

Pop superstar Taylor Swift recently announced additional dates for her much-anticipated ‘Eras’ tour, adding shows in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. Now, a new ‘Taylor Swift law’ has been introduced in Brazil to address ticket scalping.

Simone Marquetto, a member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies representing São Paulo, introduced the bill last week. It stipulates that scalpers face penalties of up to 100 times the original ticket price – with a maximum fine of BRL 600,000 (£98,600).

Marquetto took to social media earlier this week, announcing that she had obtained the signatures necessary to expedite the bill, which she planned to present alongside the national secretary for consumer protection.

The introduction of the law comes after fans of the singer reported that scalpers had taken to violent behavior in order to buy tickets for resale. At least 10 scalpers were detained after attempting to secure tickets at the box office.

“The exploitation of the Brazilian population by so-called ‘scalpers’ at any paid events expected to see a big public influx is public and notorious,” reads the bill. “Fans claim that dealers purchased a large number of tickets, making it impossible for other consumers [to do so].”

The Latin American leg of Swift’s tour will be opened by Sabrina Carpenter, with additional openers to be announced. Her show in New Jersey was met with critical acclaim, with NME describing it as a “glittering celebration of every era”.

The ‘Eras’ tour is sure to be a huge hit – and now, with the introduction of the ‘Taylor Swift law’, fans in Brazil can rest assured that scalpers won’t be able to take advantage of the situation.
