On Sunday (June 25), Elton John paid tribute to the late George Michael during his emotional Glastonbury set on what would have been the Wham! singer’s 60th birthday.
Closing out the final night of Glastonbury 2023 on the Pyramid Stage, the ‘Rocket Man’ singer honored “one of Britain’s most fantastic singers, songwriters, and artist” with a powerful rendition of ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’, as a picture of Michael appeared on the screens behind him.
John’s star-studded set also featured special guests, including The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Rina Sawayama, and 20-year-old Nashville-based songwriter Stephen Sanchez. Flowers joined John to perform a song from The Killers’ first album, ‘Hot Fuss’, while Sawayama duetted with John on ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’. Gabriels’ frontman Jacob Lusk also joined John on stage for a rendition of ‘Are You Ready For Love?’.
Prior to John’s performance, Lil Nas X had opened the night with a “incredible” slot on the Pyramid Stage.
John’s tribute to Michael was a beautiful moment that won’t soon be forgotten by fans of the two iconic artists.
