To commemorate the 29th anniversary of his passing, fans of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have taken to social media to remember the late singer-songwriter. Unfortunately, his legacy has been tarnished by a new selection of merchandise from luxury brand Saint Laurent, which has caused a stir among fans.
The new range of Kurt Cobain-inspired t-shirts, entitled “Vintage,” has been acquired and upsold by the fashion house, with prices ranging from $990 to $4,450 (£770 to £3,857). The most expensive t-shirt features the artwork of Nirvana’s 1992 compilation album, ‘Incesticide’.
Highsnobiety discussed the range on Instagram, noting that while the price tags may seem shocking, some vintage merchandise is becoming more collectable and capable of fetching a lot of money. Similarly, vintage t-shirt re-seller Burned Out joked about the new range, writing that it was marked up by four times market value to come in a $.5 YSL plastic bag.
Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth also weighed in on the discussion, sharing an image of one of the t-shirts with the caption: “Sick! So punk!”. Nonetheless, a lot of Nirvana fans have expressed their disappointment in the high prices of the t-shirts, noting the hypocrisy of it being tied to Kurt Cobain’s name.
In other Cobain news, back in April his wife, Courtney Love, shared an image of his hands, taken by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, to remember her late husband. It’s fair to say that Kurt Cobain’s legacy has been a source of inspiration for many since his passing and his music will remain a significant part of rock history.
