Debbie Harry, frontwoman of the iconic punk-rock band Blondie, has expressed her heartbreak over the death of her bandmate Chris Stein’s daughter, Akira. Akira passed away from a drug overdose in May, and her father announced the news on his Facebook page.
In response, Harry took to Instagram to post a photo of her with Stein and his family, including Akira. Alongside the image, she wrote an emotional tribute. She wrote about the joy she felt receiving birthday wishes and presents from Blondie’s loyal fans, and how the flip side of this was the sudden loss of her god-daughter. Harry continued to explain how she still felt Akira was watching her when she was performing on stage, just as she had done when she was a young girl.
Harry also used her tribute to warn her followers about the dangers of fentanyl. She said that it was too seductive and easy to get, warning her fans to be vigilant about the risks.
The news of Akira’s death comes after Stein’s absence from Blondie’s recent tour, including their slot at Glastonbury 2023. During the set, Blondie was joined by former Sex Pistol Glenn Matlock on bass. Stein explained his absence to fans in April 2022. He said he was suffering from Atrial Fibrillation, which combined with his medication was causing him too much fatigue to perform. Despite this, he reassured fans that he was still involved in recording and other projects with the band.
