Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco is on the cusp of a new era in his music career, having recently opened up about his evolving sound and touring experiences. In an interview with In Conversation, DeMarco discussed the evolution of his music style, stating “I almost feel like there was a long time where I was pretending to be something that I wasn’t and trying to do things musically that maybe… I feel like all the records I’ve put out are very much me, but in regards to the more ambient or video gamey-sounding stuff, I love it.” He went on to explain that he has learned to create music in a natural way, and to leave songs as they come out of him.

The musician has also taken a step away from his past habits and is now sober, which has changed the way he approaches performing. He shared in the same interview, “It’s interesting to me, especially doing shows like this, because it’s a challenge. Back in the day, it was like, ‘Oh, shit, we’re losing the crowd, where’s the Jameson? Ba-boom, and everyone’s like, ‘Fuck yeah!’”

DeMarco has clarified that he is not retiring from music, but is instead embarking on a new era in his artistry, saying “perhaps I’ve retired from the way things used to be. Perhaps.” Fans of Mac DeMarco can look forward to the new direction he is taking in music, as he continues to grow and mature as an artist.
